I don't want to ruin the plot with my spoilers, but your idea for the main part of the mission has never been exploited -against the player WITHIN the mission- AFAIK. Too bad, Ma'am; if not because it's sooo damned impossible on Hard I hardly doubt anybody will survive unless being an ace and even then flying it quite many times (evil AI here, gentlemen!) this would be a 5. :P
